Horse Training - How to Begin with your Horse

Horse training refers to the various techniques that are used to teach horses to accomplish some specific actions. There are various types of horse training modules that can be used to train horses and some specific types of horse training techniques to make a horse expert in different areas, like transport, sporting racing or other therapeutic work.

In order to achieve the most in horse training, you must create an atmosphere where the horse can discover on its own, aside from the horse training that you give it. Taking the time to lay definite fundamentals will also mean that you will be training a horse that is willing to please you, that is far easier to train in the long run.

Teaching good behavior to your horse right from the beginning will result in a horse that is a delight to own and ride, while keeping you as protected as possible. Whether you realise it or not, you are training the horse by just riding it. So you must do this often to give your horse grounding and get it used to being ridden. This will result in you being far safer too.

Almost every incorrect action of a horse is caused by fear, anticipation or negligence. Once your horse has learned to come to you at the command of "Here" or similar basic commands and shows no alarm of the whip while it's lightly waved over his head, and will follow you all about, then you have laid an excellent basis for further instruction.

There are a few basic tips that we at Horse Trader Online can give you:

  • Plan your training sessions carefully. Have a goal and a method of reaching that goal before you begin each session,
  • Give simple, consistent cues and immediate rewards. Horses cannot reason or think abstractly,
  • Warm up the horse both mentally and physically before training,
  • Because horses have off-days, have an alternate training plan available for days when the original plan is not effective in reaching your goal.
  • Do not ask the horse to perform maneuvers that it is physically or mentally incapable of handling. But remember that both you and the horse have to get out of your comfort zones to progress,
  • If your horse accidentally gives you more than you asked for, such as a flying lead change rather than a simple lead change, take the gift and reward the horse for it.
  • After the horse has mastered a maneuver, deliver reinforcements intermittently to maintain high response rates,
  • Recognise when the horse is trying to make a correct response, and reward small portions of the desired response

As you are training the horse, you will soon realise that the horse will also be training you. You are bound to learn more about yourself, what you can and cannot do and most important, patience.
