PETERBOROUGH is set to host the largest gathering of shire horses in the world this year.

Final preparations are underway for the Shire Horse Society Spring Show, which will provide a stunning spectacle on the East of England Showground on March 16, 17 and 18. Enthusiasts are travelling from Switzerland, Holland and Sweden to show their horses in the event and further spectators are expected from across the world. Organisers are planning the best show in the event’s history, with a host of other attractions alongside the shire horses.

“We started planning this year’s event even before the last rosette was awarded in 2011,” said David Ralley-Davies, Secretary of the Shire Horse Society. “At the heart of what we do are the shire horses that provide an incredible sight, which everyone can appreciate. However, we are also providing an event that makes for a great family day out with attractions that will entertain and educate all visitors.” The Shire Horse Society – which counts the Queen as its patron – is a registered charity that helps raise much needed funds to support the threatened breed. Its Spring Show will see more than 200 shires compete in what is regarded as the national championships.

It is a unique opportunity for the public to see this rare breed when they parade from the stables to the show arena where spectators can judge their favourite for themselves. However, the King George V Cup will be awarded to the most impressive stallion and a host of other trophies will be handed out over the weekend. “The horses that compete at the Spring Show are the best in the country and so this really is a unique opportunity for everyone,” said David. Families attending this year’s show – which is being held on Mothering Sunday weekend – can look forward to a host of other attractions including a farriery competition.

Those taking part will pit their horseshoe-making skills against each other in a public display of the centuries’ old tradition. Other attractions include Grand Arena events, a Victorian fun fair, donkey rides, trade stands and exhibitors, dog agility demonstrations, a vintage tractor display and a Shire Horse Society auction of shires and shire horse memorabilia. “Everyone who supports the show is supporting shire horses and will be playing their part in preserving the breed’s future in Britain,” said David.
